Third Baby Registry: What You Actually Need by Baby #3

I'm embarrassed to admit that my first baby registry had EIGHTY ONE items on it. Eighty. One. As always, there's no one right way to do this motherhood thing. But after three babies I can tell you, they really don't NEED that much.

As I got into the toddler years I found that more stuff just stressed me out. More to keep up with, more to clean... And the window for each item is soooo short!

Just remember as you prepare (with even less free time than you had the first time) that baby #3 is getting a more confident and capable version of you and that's better than literally anything you could buy them.

The third-baby reality

Three kids, back to back to back (ages 5, 4, and 1.5 over here) will teach you exactly which products earn their spot and which ones were sold to a first-time mom who just didn't know better yet. I blame the influencers of 2020 for half of my unused "MUST HAVE!!!" purchases.

By the third baby you already own... basically everything. So the registry question stops being "what does a baby need?" and becomes three much smarter questions:

  1. What wore out? Bottles, especially the nipples, may need replacing. Pacifiers, crib sheets, things like that.

  2. What did I hate every single day but tolerated? THIS is your registry gold. The third baby registry is the do-over.

    • For me this was my very expensive and very heavy UPPABaby stroller. I of course used it, because, we had paid for it, but wow did I regret this purchase every time I had to load it into the trunk. For baby #3 I registered for a couple new Doona accessories, as it had become our primary stroller with baby #2. We really only pulled out the UppaBaby for walks around the neighborhood.

  3. What's expired or recalled? Actually worth checking! Car seats expire (6–10 years depending on brand), crib standards changed in 2011, and old sleep products may have been recalled since your first. This is the one place NOT to hand-me-down blindly.

What actually went on my third baby registry

  • Fresh bottles — ours had started looking a bit cloudy so we decided to try some glass ones for baby girl

  • New crib sheets — mostly because we were doing a very girlie light PINK nursery :) big brothers' were still used for backups

  • Consumables: diapers, wipes, diaper cream — more boring, sure, but super practical

  • The sanity items — another sound machine and another baby monitor as our original ones now lived in older brothers' rooms.

HIGHLY recommend the Amazon baby registry. You can put extra stuff on there (diapers, medicine, etc) that you're going to buy anyway and get the 15% completion discount!

What I skipped (with zero guilt)

Tons of cute clothes. We had plenty from my older babies and my niece and they grow out of things SO incredibly fast in that first year.

Cute muslin baby blankets - we had amassed an insane number already somehow.

The perfectly stocked nursing cart. I knew I'd end up feeding all over the house.

The hand-me-down math

Between three kids, roughly 95% of what baby #3 uses is a hand-me-down, and that's the system working as intended. Two rules that make it painless: store outgoing clothes by size in labeled bins (future you will weep with gratitude), and label everything you'll pass down with your LAST name, not the kid's first name — one stamp works for every sibling.

(More on the last name-labeling system in my daycare packing post)

Should I even make a registry for a third baby?

YES — and not just for gifts. Registries get you completion discounts (10–15% off everything left on the list at most retailers), welcome boxes, and a single organized list of what actually needs buying, even if you're the one buying most of it. If people ask what you need: diapers, wipes, and gift cards for the food delivery apps. You're a third-time mom. You've earned the practical era.

Should I have a baby shower for the third baby?

This is something I googled while pregnant with my daughter (#3). Because my first two were boys, I found pretty consistently that a small shower or sprinkle for baby girl was generally acceptable. I think this is an area where you should do whatever makes you happiest. A new baby is absolutely something to celebrate, in whatever way you're comfortable! My sister threw me a small sprinkle at a paint your own pottery place with my close friends and family (all women) and it was perfect!

FAQ

What do you actually need for a third baby?

Far less than the first: a safe, unexpired car seat, fresh feeding supplies (new nipples and pacifiers even with old bottles), diapers and wipes, and replacements for whatever wore out across your first two kids. Most everything else can be a hand-me-down, but we got a few special new outfits too.

Do baby registries give discounts?

Yes — most major registries offer a completion discount of 10–15% on remaining items, plus free welcome boxes. Worth making a registry even if you buy everything yourself.

Is it OK to reuse a car seat for a third baby?

Check the expiration date printed on the seat (typically 6–10 years from manufacture) and confirm it's never been in a crash and hasn't been recalled. When in doubt, this is the item to buy new.

New here? I keep a full baby registry checklist — what to buy, skip & borrow from the first-time-mom perspective too — this post is its jaded, efficient little sister. 🤍
