What to Pack for Daycare: The Infant Checklist (From a Mom Who's Done It 3x)

Three kids through daycare will turn you into a packing MACHINE. Not because I'm organized by nature (I'm not — I'm a systems person because I'm forgetful, there's a difference), but because the morning you show up without replacement backup clothes is the morning you learn.

The infant daycare checklist: what to pack for daycare
What our daycare (and most) will ask for daily or weekly:
Bottles — prepped, labeled, one more than you think you need
Pumped milk or formula — labeled with name AND date (most states require the date — ask your center)
2–3 full changes of clothes — full changes means FULL changes. Socks too. We were also asked to send extra shoes for my daughter's daycare.
Diapers + wipes — usually a weekly bulk drop-off; this is our diaper pick and it's the most affordable clean diaper on the market
Diaper cream — signed authorization form usually required, ask at drop-off
Pacifiers — two, labeled, because one WILL vanish into the daycare dimension
Seasonal extras — hat, gloves, jacket, depending on how cold it gets
Sleep sack — may vary by center
Comfort item — once they're old enough, per your center's rules
Label everything — and use your LAST name

The tip I didn't think about until kid two: put your LAST name on everything, not the kid's first name. If there's any chance of hand-me-downs between siblings (and with three kids, everything here is on its second or third tour of duty), your last name works forever. One stamp, every sibling, done. The stickers survive the dishwasher better than you'd expect but the stamp survives the dryer basically forever.
I had already stamped everything with baby #1's name and then restamped (next to it) with baby #2. We now have friends' kids who wear those items (bless their daycare teachers for the confusion this must cause!). Not the end of the world by any means but if you're already planning more than 1, I'd go last name.

Water bottles: the gross truth and the fix
Once your baby graduates to a straw cup or water bottle, learn from my mistakes: water bottles grow science experiments in the parts you can't see. My rules: every part in the dishwasher DAILY (lid, straw, gasket — pop the gasket out, that's where the funk lives), a weekly vinegar deep clean, and a backup bottle so cleaning never becomes a 6am emergency. The drop zone: yes, even the baby can do this
Here's the one that changed our mornings: everything daycare-related lives in one landing spot by the door. Bag hooks at kid height, a bin per kid, shoes in one place. I wrote up the whole setup in my back-to-school drop zone post, but the piece that surprises people: once your baby hits about a year, they can learn it too. My 1.5-year-old puts her own shoes in the bin. Is it slow? Absolutely. But toddlers are OBSESSED with putting things where they go if you give them a "where." Better yet, every item with a home is an item you're not hunting for as you're headed out the door five minutes late.
Heads up - there are sick days coming
Something I recommend to ANY friend with a kiddo starting daycare is Blueberry Pediatrics. That first sick season was brutal for each of my kids and especially as a first time mom it took time to figure out what warranted getting in the car and going to the ER vs waiting for a ped appointment the next day. Blueberry called in Zofran for us when a stomach bug hit in the wee hours of the morning, diagnosed and treated ear infections without leaving our home and just truly made me feel so much more confident as a mom knowing I had a real doctor in my pocket 24/7. Can't recommend them enough!
