The Newborn Chats | accepting help, the importance of community, the village and your marriage.

Better support for you, mama, means better support for this baby. You will figure out the baby care stuff. Diapers aren’t hard. You’ll get the hang of bathing them. But the relationship stuff, the community building - this takes intentional focus and work!

As humans we were never meant to do this alone! Be mindful of it and do what you can to set up some support ahead of time.

And my rule for myself is I only worry if the house alarm goes off. Until then, no reason to think it’s anything other than just another night!

There’s so much I could say but the TLDR here is treating them like little adults. Not discounting their emotions just because they’re little. Giving them the same courtesy and empathy I would any human I interact with in daily life.

I’m still learning new things every day as a parent but these are some of the things I’ve learned the last 4.5 years that help with my toddlers.

We are also big on teaching them about the world and how they will (one day) need to take care of themselves. They can cook simple meals. Know how to clean. Help with grocery shopping. We talk about focusing on the task at hand and prioritizing the most important things. There’s really nothing off limits - you just have to put it in a way they understand.

And don’t let anybody tell you “terrible twos” are coming. The toddler years have been the silliest, most magical years for our family yet! Yes they require patience but if you slow down with them you’ll enjoy them so much more 🫶

There are so many little things around the house that my little guys help us with. They’re 4.5 and almost 3 and as Montessori kids, they love to be helpers.

- Carrying in the groceries, putting things away
- Washing all of the produce, drying it and putting it away
- Stocking the snack bin in the pantry
- Unloading their dishes from the dishwasher
- Helping refill ice trays
- Gathering old water glasses off my nightstand

Could I do all of this myself? Of course! Do I want to? Hell no I don’t 😂 even if it takes longer sometimes, it does help to have extra hands. While they help, I can clean other areas and get more done. I also love that we’re teaching them how to take care of their environment from a young age.

My mom taught me this tip, my dad traveled a lot growing up and she was alone with the three kiddos. Flash forward to me as a mom, I never sleep as well when Hot Golf Dad is away but this really helps for added peace of mind!!

And my rule for myself is I only worry if the house alarm goes off. Until then, no reason to think it’s anything other than just another night!

I’m in the process of reposting some of my old Reels to remove my kids faces. This original one in particular was my first to go big - 2m views - with tons of helpful comments and suggestions. I hated to Archive it but I’ve saved a post on my website (itsmamameg.com) with ALL of the tips and tricks, and I wanted to repost for anyone who may have had it Saved to look back on later.

Since my daughter was so little when we got out of the PICU, we basically put the bubble in newborn bubble - pulled the older kids from daycare for a bit, avoided going out or any germs coming in - until she was a bit stronger and bigger.

Once my older guys went back to daycare we tried to avoid daycare germs coming home as much as possible and changed clothes, threw the kids in the bath, or at the very least washed hands right away and kept them physically away from baby.

I know to some it will seem ridiculous but after what we went through no precaution seemed too great. I share in case it can help another family avoid going through it because unfortunately you never know when you’ll get unlucky.

The single most important thing: you as the primary caregiver washing your hands before you touch your baby. Every. Single. Time. Especially when you have older kids in the home like us. If you’re playing with your older kiddos and the baby cries, you need to wash your hands before helping baby. Wiping down your phone is a great habit too - I keep wipes by my nursery chair.

There are so many little things around the house that my little guys help us with. They’re 4.5 and almost 3 and as Montessori kids, they love to be helpers.

- Carrying in the groceries, putting things away
- Washing all of the produce, drying it and putting it away
- Stocking the snack bin in the pantry
- Unloading their dishes from the dishwasher
- Helping refill ice trays
- Gathering old water glasses off my nightstand

Could I do all of this myself? Of course! Do I want to? Hell no I don’t 😂 even if it takes longer sometimes, it does help to have extra hands. While they help, I can clean other areas and get more done. I also love that we’re teaching them how to take care of their environment from a young age.
